Is Omegle safe? (And is random video chat safe in 2026?)

Published Apr 28, 2026 · Updated May 12, 2026 · OmeVidChat

"Is Omegle safe?" was one of the most-asked questions about the site for years. The honest answers: Omegle is now closed, so the question is moot for Omegle itself — but while it ran, no, it wasn't especially safe, and that's a big part of why it shut down. Here's the real story, and how to think about safety on random video chat today.

This is general guidance, not legal or professional advice. If you're in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.

Is Omegle still around?

No. Omegle.com shut down in November 2023. Its founder posted a farewell letter explaining that the burden of fighting misuse — and the legal pressure that came with it — had become unsustainable. So there's no Omegle to be "safe" or "unsafe" on anymore. (Full background: what happened to Omegle.) If you've landed on a site claiming to be "Omegle", it's a copycat — be careful.

Was Omegle safe while it ran?

Not really, and that's not controversial. Omegle's design — connect anyone to anyone, anonymously, instantly, on video, with light moderation — meant users (including, notoriously, minors) could be exposed to nudity, harassment, and predatory behavior in a couple of clicks. There were high-profile lawsuits, including child-safety cases. The site added some safeguards over the years (a moderated section, a Terms requirement to be 18+ or 13+ with parental permission), but it remained a place where bad encounters were common. The shutdown was, in the founder's framing, partly an admission that keeping it safe at scale wasn't feasible.

So is any random video chat safe?

"Safe" is relative. A random-stranger video site will never be as safe as texting your friends — there's inherent risk in talking to people you don't know who can see and hear you. But the risk varies a lot by site and by behavior. A site is meaningfully safer when it:

OmeVidChat is built around exactly that list — it's 18+, camera-mandatory, has a Report button, an admin dashboard, one-click IP bans, and limited moderation records (see the safety page and the Terms). It doesn't make random video chat risk-free; nothing does. It makes it as accountable and clean as the format reasonably allows.

And to be clear: not for kids

Omegle's biggest safety failure was minors using it. Random video chat — OmeVidChat included — is for adults only. If you're under 18, please don't use these sites. If you encounter someone who appears to be a minor, or content involving a minor, report it immediately; such reports go to NCMEC and law enforcement.
