How can it be free?
Because it's built to be cheap to run: the video goes peer-to-peer between browsers (WebRTC), so the expensive part — streaming video — never touches a server. The site only handles matchmaking, the text chat, and moderation. That keeps costs low enough that the random video chat itself stays free, with no need to gate features behind payments.
