What happened to Omegle? (And where to chat now)

Published Jan 14, 2026 · Updated May 12, 2026 · OmeVidChat

For 14 years, "Omegle" was a one-word answer to "how do I talk to a random stranger on video?" Then, in November 2023, it was gone. Here's what happened to Omegle, why it shut down, and where people go now.

The short answer

Omegle shut down on November 8, 2023. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, posted a long farewell letter on the site explaining the decision. The reasons came down to two things: the relentless burden of fighting misuse of the platform, and the legal and financial pressure that came with it. After the shutdown, omegle.com just shows that letter — there's no "Omegle online" mode anymore, no Omegle app, nothing to log into. It's not down for maintenance; it's closed.

The longer story

Omegle launched in 2009, built by an 18-year-old, with a deliberately bare design: a text box, a "Start" button, and the promise that you'd be connected to a stranger. Video chat came soon after. For a generation it was a rite of passage — equal parts thrilling, weird, funny, and occasionally awful. It exploded again during the 2020 lockdowns when everyone was stuck at home looking for human contact.

But "connect anyone to anyone, anonymously, on video" is a hard thing to keep clean. Omegle became a magnet for the worst behavior online, including content involving minors. There were high-profile lawsuits. Moderating it at scale was expensive and, by the founder's own account, emotionally brutal. In the farewell letter, K-Brooks framed the shutdown as no longer sustainable — financially or personally — to keep fighting that fight. So Omegle closed.

Is Omegle coming back?

There's no indication of an official return. The brand and the goodwill around "Omegle" are still huge — which is exactly why a flood of sites rushed in afterward calling themselves "the new Omegle" or "Omegle alternatives." Some are decent. Many are not: thin reskins, paywalls, bot farms, or worse. So if you're searching for Omegle today, what you're really looking for is a good Omegle alternative.

Where to chat now

That's why OmeVidChat exists. It's a free, 18+ Omegle alternative that does the thing Omegle did — one click, one random stranger, live video and text, a "next stranger" button — without the bloat:

A word on doing it responsibly

Omegle's ending is a cautionary tale. If you use any "talk to strangers" site — OmeVidChat included — be smart: don't share personal info, assume you can be recorded, report bad behavior, and remember these sites are for adults only. We wrote a full guide: video chat safety tips.
